BBC NEWS | Magazine | Who are the British creationists?

    Creationism in School Science http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/7612152.stm

"Thinking is an anathema to religion" Richard Dawkins.

Children and Parents, Happy and Amused

    'Fundamentalist Fun'

    'The School Harvest Festival'

Cultural-Religious with some Paganism/Pantheism and Religious Fundamentalist (great fun) was had by all! 'Over the top' Creationism and some really divisive Christianity. Sin = "Who is going to Heaven and who is going to Hell"? Frighteningly and threateningly produced; for all the 5 to 13 year old age group, was at its best, and at our particular school. Taking it all in frightfully seriously and all as some definite reality (See, 'Fairy Fancy' Dawkins - unlike, maybe - 'Father Christmas') in the leafy Autumn of 2008.

In the name of a muddled school ethos and in the very questionable gain of some social inclusion.

Schools and the Charity Commissioners: 'the edict' for some schools - to give or have: a greater involvement/participation in the local community with the threat of loss of 'charitable status' for taxation purposes - pushing some children (the forced benefactors with their parents) into fundamentalism or fundamentalist fringe beliefs or faiths (or not so fundamentalist, but possibly personally unpalatable - 'multiculturalism' vs the very acceptable palatability and tolerance of 'multi racialism') and all in the name of 'social inclusion' and some 'charitable benefit to the community'.

The RC Priest practising metaphysically, hands out or the hands on - blessing, and a female C of E Vicar looking on! The School Charity Test  http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/7655368.stm - Forced into giving and socialising, without any discernment or choice! It's so easy to push children around, but the British adult doesn't like it in the 'playground for faith and belief (ideology)' UK. See, below, Suzi Leather - when are us (Brits) going to get totally fed up and bored, with such bossy and expensive people!

What wonders we can now dream up in our 'Nuclear Self' or our 'The Citadel of Self' {the retreat of religion into - due to the lack of any 'outward signs'}, with the proponents of religion that go totally uncensored in the above production, with the 'bringing on' and giving, to less fortunate others: a great and good harvest, all very much in the 'primitive science' mode. Creationism is seriously alive and well in the rural English Villages and our Schools! Ref, Religion in Schools - Church Schools and Faith Schools UK.

I just do wonder, "What problems are lurking for children psychologically and our society, and if there are any that we may be making for our (vulnerable) children". Parents are needed to unscramble and unbrainwash their off-springs brains. Maybe more: to help in teaching, for every-one's general awareness, of the 'real state of affairs' existing in the world? I don't think that it can be particularly beneficial! It is great not to be 100% certain of anything (like some of those above, and obviously, the Creationists) as 'fundamentalist fun' and 'community' did make everyone feel really good! Ref, 'indoctrination' of the 'captive audience' (children) and the - 'power(s) of the sub-group'. In the childhood of the intellect - 'The Long Childhood' Bronowski    http://www.bbcshop.com/History/Ascent-Of-Man-DVD/invt/bbcdvd1608

"Philosophy is the childhood of the intellect, and a culture that tries to skip it will never grow up."

    Thomas Nagel

"Facts don't cease to exist because they are ignored". Huxley.

"In time, it is true, experience teaches him that magic formulas and ceremonial gestures do not give him what he wants. But until experience has taught him - and he takes a surprisingly long time to learn - man’s behaviour is in many respects far sillier than that of the animal". Huxley.

"Religion should be taught and examined in the same way as science is; after being examined by the children and their class and being commensurate with their development (Sigmund Freud) - it should be allocated the very short amount of time that the class thinks that it deserves and then to proceed on to the subject of Philosophy".

"The truths contained in religious doctrines are after all so distorted and systematically disguised," writes Sigmund Freud, "that the mass of humanity cannot recognize them as truth. The case is similar to what happens when we tell a child that new born babies are brought by the stork. Here, too, we are telling truth in symbolic clothing, for we know what a large bird signifies. But the child does not know it. He hears only the distorted part of what we say, and feels that he has been deceived; and we know how often his distrust of the grown-ups and his refractoriness actually take their start from this impression. We have become convinced that it is better to avoid such symbolic disguisings of the truth in what we tell children and not to withhold from them a knowledge of the true state of affairs commensurate with their intellectual level".

"When people are fanatically dedicated to political or religious faiths or any other kind of dogmas or goals, it's always because these dogmas or goals are in doubt". Robert Pirsig.

Selling shares in their own companies to fund liquidity - CDS Market. "The BBC's Michael Robinson investigates these cases and what they reveal about the present disaster. Some cases claim to show how well-known banks protected their profits by deceiving investors. Others accuse top bank executives of using insider information to sell personal shareholdings before bad news about their bank was revealed. The legal papers claim that the system that should independently rate the risk of investments was compromised. While policymakers struggle to prevent a rerun of the Great Depression of the 1930s, these cases help highlight what some now call the greatest failure of regulation in modern financial history". "By 10.06am this morning the campaign had already reached its original target of £5,500 and has gone on to raise six times that amount… and growing! You can add your own donation at www.justgiving.com/atheistbus

The Atheist Bus Campaign really began earlier this year, thanks to readers of The Guardian’s Comment Is Free (CiF) website.  Comedy writer Ariane Sherine, 28, wrote a  CiF article in June about the Christian adverts running on London buses. These ads featured the URL of a website which said non-Christians would burn in hell for all eternity.  Sherine suggested that atheists reading her article could each donate £5 to fund a reassuring counter-advert. The campaign received a boost when the BHA undertook to accept donations on behalf of the campaign and Richard Dawkins generously agreed to match all donations up to a maximum of £5,500.

Ariane Sherine, Atheist Bus Campaign creator has said, “I’m very pleased so many people are behind the atheist bus. This is absolutely brilliant and I’d like to thank everyone who donated for their support. The sky’s the limit for atheists even if we don’t believe there’s anyone up there.”

Many comments left by donors on the fundraising website at www.justgiving.com/atheistbus  are calling for the campaign to be rolled out to Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh and other towns and cities all over the UK, a possibility which is not beyond the realms of possibility now that so much more money has been raised.  The campaign seems to be appealing to donors with a penchant for the comic, judging by the many jokey comments!

Hanne Stinson, BHA Chief Executive says, “We see so many posters advertising salvation through Jesus or threatening us with eternal damnation, that I felt sure that a bus advert like this will be welcomed as a breath of fresh air.  If it raises a smile as well as making people think, so much the better. We have met our target five times over but don’t stop giving! If the money keeps pouring in we can expand the campaign, not just to ads inside the buses as well as outside, but to ads on the tube or other transport, and in locations outside London.” " http://www.humanism.org.uk/site/cms/

The stranger, who wanders through the great streets of London and does not chance right into the regular quarters of the people, sees little or nothing of the misery there, only here and there at the mouth of some dark alley, stands a ragged woman with a suckling babe at her wasted breast and begs with her eyes. Perhaps, if those eyes are still beautiful, one glances into them and shrinks back at the wretchedness of the world within them. The common beggars are old people, generally blacks, who stand at the corners of the streets cleaning pathways, a very necessary thing in muddy London and ask for coppers (coins) in reward. It is in the dusky twilight that poverty with her mates, vice and crime, glide forth from their lairs. They shun daylight the more anxiously, the more cruelly, their wretchedness contrasts with the pride of wealth, which glitters, everywhere. Only hunger sometimes drives them at noonday from their dens and then they stand, with silent speaking eyes, staring beseechingly at the rich merchant who hurries along, busy and jingling gold. Or, at the lazy Lord, who like a surfeited god, rides along on his high horse, casting now and then, an aristocratically indifferent glance at the mob below, as though they were swarming ants. Or, at all events, a mass of baser beings, whose joys and sorrows have nothing to do with his feelings. Yet, over the vulgar multitude, which sticks fast to the soil, soar like beings of higher nature England's nobility. They regard their little island as only a temporary resting place, Italy as their summer garden, Paris as their social saloon and the whole world as their inheritance.

"Global inequalities in income, and living standards, have reached grotesque proportions," according to the latest annual United Nations Human Development Report (UNHDR), published last month. Sept 1999 - It's got much worse 2008!?

While 1.3 billion people struggle to live on less than $US1 a day, the world's richest 200 people doubled their net worth between 1994 and 1998 to more than $1 trillion. The world's top three billionaires alone possess more assets than the combined Gross National Product of all the least developed countries and their combined population of 600 million people.

In his new book, "50 People Who Buggered Up Britain", the Daily Mail's peerless sketchwriter Quentin Letts offers his own roll call of the 50 prime suspects he blames for wrecking our country. One of Letts' culprits is Alun Michael - a figure with whom followers of hunting's history will be all too familiar. This extract was published in the Daily Mail on 8th October 2008:

"Fox-hunting, as traditionally practised, became an illegal activity during Tony Blair's second term. Hundreds of hours of parliamentary effort were devoted to its extermination. MPs bent over backwards to criminalise an outdoor sport pursued by some of the most upstanding members of the community. The ban was ridiculous and impractical and it tarnished Parliament's own standing.

"The Government minister who pushed through the hunting ban? A dismal little doormat called Alun Michael.

"To look at, he is not a striking proposition, a careworn creature with the hunched shoulders and lank hair of a natural loser. Alun Michael is an authentic middler, a worker bee, putty in the hands of more confident colleagues.

"On hunting, he got his way. Ill-informed, emotive arguments defeated common sense. But he still looked flea-bitten as he led the canter towards the ban. He still looked miserable, mangy, weak."

No 'fresh' eggs for us and the children for two weeks! The fox has put the hens off laying and if the fox hadn't been caught, just in time, all the hens would of been killed for nothing! The last time I tried to shoot a fox I missed - I might of wounded it - it probably had an agonizing death - this one the terriers got (at a local farm) and was instantly dispatched. It was after the hens and more... Keep on 'Hunting' - the fox is! See, photos. RSPCA's Advice to Cat Owners. Keep cats in at night, because they may be killed by the fox: the cat will fight and kill wildlife, also there is a chance that the cat might be run over (depending where you live). This is like depriving you of light or forcing you to live some 'half-life'. Muslims believed that gold and silver must circulate, and this circulation, called rawaj, was a social and religious duty. Hoarding gold and silver was forbidden by the Qur’an: “Those who store up gold and silver and do not spend them in the way of God, tell them of a painful chastisement!” The cosmographer al-Qawini, writing only a decade or so after the minting of the first florin, says: "Gold is the noblest of the blessings of Almighty God upon his servants, for it is the foundation of the affairs of this world and brings order to the affairs of mankind…. With silver and gold coins, everything can be bought and sold. They must circulate, unlike other forms of wealth, for it is not desirable for anyone to accumulate silver and gold…. Anyone who stores them up destroys the wisdom created by God, just as if one imprisoned the qadi of a town and prevented him from carrying out his duties toward the people.”

The dangers that are inherent within sedentism, or sedentist society and cultures vs the egalitarianism that existed before any sedentism. Even, the so called, primitive people were "extremely wary"! Ref, Anthropology. (Vote for the most unlikely looking celebrity - Prime Minister Gordon Brown in the UK. Markets need morals, says Brown http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7655723.stm )

"After four years of investigating the Black Friday crash in 1929, Franklin D. Roosevelt's Administration figured out that the main actions that lead us into the Depression were bank's using their clients money to speculate on risky investments and pushing other risky investments on the very same customers. Some of the investments were sold directly to the bank's investors, others were made by the banks themselves. When the investments went belly up, the banks had no money to pay their customers back.

To stop this from ever happening again, FDR and fellow Democratic Senators and Congressmen passed the Glass-Steagall Act in 1933. The law stopped commercial banks from merging with investment banks, established the FDIC to insure bank deposits, gave the Federal Reserve control over setting interest rates, and made other banking reforms. The entire point was to protect deposits and stop banks from speculating with that money.

Strictly speaking, the Glass-Steagall Act was a huge success. It restored confidence in America's banking system and worked relatively well for six decades. That is, until Citigroup decided to spend over 30 years working behind the scenes to repeal parts of the act.

In the 1960's, Citigroup, then known as First National City Bank, (and later Citibank and Citi) started talking to Washington about repealing the Glass-Steagall Act. It took many years, and to make a long story short, they finally succeeded in 1999. BTW, First National City Bank (Citi) is to blame for the modern credit card society, having introduced in 1967 the card that later was renamed Mastercard, the first credit card.

What does this have to do with Bill Clinton, or the current economic feces-fest we are currently in?

When Bill Clinton was President in 1998, Citibank, by then called Citicorp, was trying to merge with Traveller's group (the investment firm with the ads with the red umbrella). Under the Glass-Steagall Act, this was prohibited. Way back in 1933 FDR and Co. were wise enough to know that commercial banks shouldn't own investment banks, it leads to all sorts of illegal shenanigans.

But years of bribing, er, lobbying Congress had done it's trick, and Citicorp's CEO Sandy Weill said he was assured by Federal sources the merger would be approved, which it was in 1998. (Technically the merger was illegal in 1998 as the law wasn't repealed until November, 1999.) Renamed Citigroup after the merger, they have gone on to purchase other investment firms.

The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999 (called the Financial Services Modernization Act at the time) repealed 66 years of consumer protections and paved the way for financial mergers and the introduction of new investment products. The Act was written by Republican Senators including Phil Gramm, and early voting was split down party lines until President Clinton forced a rewrite of the bill" @  http://community.adn.com/adn/node/131758

A warning of what might happen unless mankind comes to the realisation - at last, that we all live on the same planet and must not destroy it and each other - unless mankind does something more about its current predicament - a market system which simply encourages consumption - a rational system for the allocation of resources is required - conveys all important message that unless we can eliminate abject and all pervading poverty in so much of the world by the end of this century (now - last!) mankind may not survive to see another.

"Economic crises, unemployment, war, govern man's fate. Man has built his world, he has built factories and houses, he produces cars and clothes, he grows grain and fruit. But he has become estranged from the product of his own hands, he is not really the master any more of the world he has built, on the contrary, this man made world has become his master, before whom he bows down, which he tries to placate or manipulate as best he can. The work of his own hands becomes his God. He seems to be driven by self interest, but in reality his total self with all its concrete potentialities has become an instrument for the purposes of the very machine his hands have built. He keeps up the illusion of being the center of the world, and yet, he is pervaded by an intense sense of insignificance and powerlessness, which his ancestors once consciously felt towards God". See, 'The Fear of Freedom' Erich Fromm.

"To have a society of labourers, it is, of course, not necessary that every member actually be a laborer or worker, not even the emancipation of the working class and the enormous potential power, which majority rule accords to is decisive here, but only that all members consider whatever they do primarily, as a way to sustain their own lives and those of their families". An "Original Article". Written before the modern knowledge of an immanent and catastrophic "Global Warming" scenario that confronts our very existence - probably, our destruction at sometime in the near future, even if we all take some action!

"Knowledge and freedom are nowadays regarded as values, but the role of values in human behavior has always been a difficult problem. As values are expressed in poetry or in prose. I have selected examples of both in order to make a particular point.

    Roaring Boys and Whores
While food has flavor and limbs are shapely
And hearts beat bravely to fiddle or drum
Our proper employment is reckless enjoyment
For too soon the noiseless night will come

"Our species has been favored on this planet, although we have not always been good caretakers of our globe's resources. Our stay here, in the spaces of geological time has been brief. No one can tell us our business. But I think it is something more than to consume as much as we can and then blow the place up".

"We have, if not a duty, then a need deeply engraved within our culture to pass the place on, no worse than we found it. Those of us, who do not expect an after life, may see in this our only immortality to pass on the succession of life, the succession of culture. It may even be that we are happier, when we are engaged in matters larger than our own wants and ourselves".

Undoubtedly, Auden's poem represents the viewpoint of many, right across the age and social spectrum, whilst Thompson's prose suggests that a different attitude to life is desirable. Both viewpoints are tenable, but whilst the poem contains only one fact, the fact of death, the prose - incorporates a number of scientific statements.

What I wish to suggest is that values may be obtained from knowledge and the more comprehensive our knowledge, the more worthwhile are our values likely to be. The great Dr.Bronowski wrote, "I believe that science can create values and will create them precisely as literature does, by looking into the human personality, by discovering what divides it and what cements it".

Science is not technology. Science is a Latin word meaning knowledge. One of Bronowski's great achievements was to show the 'unity of art and science'. Can a few lines of poetry contain as much knowledge as a prose passage, and thus create worthwhile values? You may consider that Wordsworth accomplished this seemingly impossible feat when he wrote:

The world is too much with us; late and soon.
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers,
    Little we see in Nature that is ours;
We have given our hearts away…

Look around you, I think, Wordsworth's poem contains a number of testable scientific facts about the human brain, and human behavior, and he used this knowledge to create values.

The essential message of Thompson's prose and Wordsworth's poem, is that: we are part of the evolving animal world and that this fact, which individually and collectively, we prefer to ignore. We pretend we are god like creatures playing with nature, not subject to her inexorable law. Smart organisms survive and those that fail to make sense of their environment perish. We must understand ourselves and our place in nature or die. There is no choice about this. The only choice is to recognize it and do so in time".

(I have a feeling and right now: this time may of gone, and gone well past it's sell by date, so maybe, it is, and if they feel like it: everyone should concentrate a little bit on Auden's poem)

BBC TV Earth: The Climate Wars http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00djvq9 Dr Iain Stewart traces the history of climate change from its very beginning and examines just how the scientific community managed to get it so very wrong back in the Seventies.
